Canberra timber floor specialists
Heritage Floor Restoration Canberra, Parquetry Repairs, Encapsulation and Historic Timber Floor Repairs.
Older timber floors bring character that can be worth preserving. Country & Heritage Timber Floors assesses restoration projects across Canberra and the surrounding region, planning repairs and refinishing around the condition of the existing boards.

Start with what can be retained
We discuss your priorities, inspect wear and previous repairs, and consider the remaining timber thickness. The aim is to identify practical restoration options before assuming the whole floor needs replacing.
Repair with realistic expectations
Original board sizes, species and profiles can be difficult to source. Suitable replacement or salvaged timber depends on availability. Age, sunlight and previous finishes affect colour, so an exact invisible match cannot be promised.
Respect the floor’s character
Some marks and variation may remain after restoration. Discuss which features you want to retain, your preferred finish and how the rooms will be used. The agreed scope should distinguish repairs, preparation and finishing.
Plan around the property
Tell us about known heritage requirements, conservation advice and other renovation work before scope is agreed. These may affect the approach, timing and approvals needed. Do not assume every older floor is suitable for sanding.
Share the story of your floor
Send your suburb, room photos, close-ups of damage and any known information about the timber or earlier work. We will discuss the inspection needed to plan the next step.

A floor worth keeping
Keep your heritage project protected and restored
Established in 1978, Country & Heritage Timber Floors works with existing timber rather than assuming every worn floor needs replacement. From older pine boards and hardwood to parquetry, we recommend the level of work the floor actually needs.
Some engineered timber floors can also be sanded, subject to the thickness and condition of their wear layer. We check this before recommending a full resand.
Choose the right level of restoration.

Full sand & coat
We remove the old coating, prepare the timber and apply a selected coating system. This is suitable where a floor needs a substantial refresh, subject to its condition and construction.

Cut-back polish & recoat
Where an existing coating is sound and compatible, we can prepare the surface and add a coat. This does not remove deep scratches or stains within the timber.

Repairs & floor preparation
We assess damaged boards, loose parquetry, gaps and localised repairs. Filling, replacement timber and extensive hand sanding are quoted according to the floor’s condition.
From inspection to aftercare
How we work on your floor.
01
Inspect
We identify timber type, floor construction, existing finish, damage and any access or moisture issues.
02
Prepare
We agree on repairs, furniture access, dust protection and the appropriate sanding or recoating method.
03
Sand & coat
We use professional sanding and dust extraction equipment, then apply the coating system selected for your floor.
04
Care
We provide product-specific advice on walking, moving furniture, cleaning and allowing the finish to cure.

Coating choices
A finish that suits the floor and the people using it.
We discuss sheen, appearance, traffic and practical access before recommending a finish.
Two-component water-based polyurethane
Often a strong choice for busy households. Selected products provide durable protection with generally lower odour than solvent-based systems. We offer matt, satin and gloss options where suitable.
Solvent-based polyurethane
Available when a particular floor or specification calls for it. Stronger odours and ventilation requirements need to be considered during application and early curing.
Every coating has limits. Sand, pet claws, furniture movement and spills can still mark timber floors. We explain maintenance and aftercare for the selected product.
Heritage Timber Flooring – Frequently Asked QuestionsFrequently asked questions
FAQ
Do you work on heritage and historically significant timber floors?
Yes. Country & Heritage Timber Floors has extensive experience working with heritage, institutional and architecturally significant timber flooring. These projects often require a more considered approach than standard residential flooring, with careful assessment of the existing floor, its age, construction, timber species, previous coatings and the heritage value of the space.
Our work has included significant projects such as the National Library of Australia, Canberra Grammar School Main Dining Hall, government buildings and other heritage and institutional properties.
What does heritage floor restoration involve?
Heritage restoration can involve a combination of:
-
detailed inspection and condition assessment
-
identification of timber species and existing coatings
-
repair or replacement of damaged boards
-
matching new timber to the existing floor
-
localised sanding and resurfacing
-
full sanding and recoating where appropriate
-
preservation of original features and patina
-
protection of surrounding heritage elements
-
staged works to minimise disruption
The goal is generally to retain as much of the original floor as practical while improving its appearance, performance and longevity.
Can damaged sections of a heritage floor be repaired?
Yes. In many cases, damaged areas can be repaired without replacing the entire floor.
Repairs may include:
-
individual board replacement
-
patch repairs
-
filling localised damage
-
repairing loose or moving boards
-
replacing badly worn sections
-
matching timber colour, grain and board dimensions
-
blending repaired areas into the existing floor
Where possible, we aim to preserve the original material and only replace what is necessary.
What is encapsulation?
Encapsulation is a preservation method used where an existing floor or surface should be protected rather than aggressively sanded or removed.
Depending on the project, encapsulation may involve carefully preparing the existing surface and applying an appropriate coating system designed to stabilise, seal and protect it.
This approach can be particularly useful where:
-
the existing floor has heritage significance
-
aggressive sanding may remove too much original material
-
the floor contains historic coatings or features
-
preservation is more important than making the floor look completely new
Encapsulation can help retain the character and history of the floor while improving durability and serviceability.
Can heritage floors still be sanded and recoated?
Often, yes, but this must be assessed carefully.
Older floors may already have been sanded several times, and excessive sanding can reduce the remaining timber thickness or damage tongue-and-groove boards.
Before recommending sanding, we assess:
-
remaining timber thickness
-
board condition
-
previous sanding
-
movement and structural condition
-
existing coatings
-
heritage requirements
Where full sanding is not appropriate, we may recommend lighter resurfacing, localised repairs or encapsulation instead.
How do you match replacement timber to an old floor?
Matching heritage timber requires more than simply selecting the same species.
We consider:
-
timber species
-
board width and thickness
-
grain structure
-
age and colour
-
existing wear and patina
-
coating type
-
surrounding light exposure
In some situations, reclaimed or specially machined timber may be required to achieve the best possible match.
What coatings are suitable for heritage floors?
The coating system depends on the condition of the floor, the level of traffic and the heritage requirements of the building.
Modern commercial-grade water-based coatings are often suitable because they provide:
-
excellent durability
-
lower odour
-
reduced yellowing
-
faster drying
-
lower VOC levels
-
a more natural timber appearance
For heritage projects, coating selection should also consider the original appearance and the expectations of the architect, heritage consultant, building manager or client.
Can works be completed in stages?
Yes. Many heritage and institutional projects need to remain operational.
We can plan works in stages to accommodate:
-
school terms
-
public access
-
events
-
government operations
-
furniture relocation
-
restricted working hours
-
after-hours or weekend access
For larger projects, we normally recommend a staged program agreed before works commence.
Do heritage projects require a site inspection?
Yes. Heritage work should generally be inspected before a final scope is prepared.
A site inspection allows us to assess the condition of the floor and determine whether the best approach is:
repair, restoration, resurfacing, sanding and coating, encapsulation, partial replacement or a combination of these methods.
What makes heritage flooring work different from normal floor sanding?
Heritage work requires greater emphasis on preservation, compatibility and long-term outcomes.
The best result is often not the most aggressive restoration. The objective is to protect the history and character of the building while ensuring the floor remains safe, functional and visually appropriate for many years to come.
At Country & Heritage Timber Floors, we approach heritage flooring with the understanding that we are not simply working on timber — we are helping preserve part of the building’s history.
